I love your blog!! lol. I use that non-descriptive phrase ALL THE TIME!! And you're right it does have different expressive meanings to it. I use it to express that something is crazy and that I can't believe it either like your example. Another situation is when I agree with someone I will say "I know" instead of "me too" or "I agree." It's funny though because listeners actuslly know what I mean when I say it to refer to something else so the conversation isn't interupted because of confusion or anything. Just like the commercial "dude" that we watched. The whole class picked up on every meaning of the phrase 'dude' in the given context. Amazing.
ok, so i'm a linguistics major--i've taken spanish, french, and german, and i know most everyone has begun learning another language. i know that (at least in introductory german and french) there are different ways or different verbs to say that you know something/someone. (ich weiss/je sais) do you think this is somethigng cultural? or is it just like the 'dude' guy--something we just repeat that can mean many, many different things in different contexts?
